How did you become a makeup artist?
I would say that I’ve always been a makeup artist. I love making myself and people up. I went into makeup because it is something that I’m very passionate about. It’s something I enjoy doing without stress.
I started developing myself by writing out tips from Hints magazine, way back. It may surprise you to know that I haven’t gone for any formal makeup training till date. I did self training by buying makeup books, CD’s, watching online videos etc.
Who or what inspires you?
My role model is Mrs Tara Fela-Durutoye, CEO, House of Tara. One of the reasons I’ve come this far is because I came in contact with her. She has been a huge source of inspiration to me and I want to use this opportunity to say a very big thank you to her.
At what point did you decide that makeup is a viable business?
Makeup has always been one of my hobbies but I started thinking of it as a business when a very good friend of mine advised that I start making money from it since it is something I enjoy doing.
How often do you organise training sessions and who can apply?
I organise a minimum of four training sessions each year, that is one in each quarter. The first training for 2013 will hold on the 21st of January in Port Harcourt. Anyone who has a passion for makeup or who wants to improve on their makeup skills can apply.
Realistically, how much can one learn in the course of the training programme?
There’s a lot to learn from the training sessions. The course includes modules on preparing the skin for makeup, how to take care of your skin, skin sins, all about the face, bridal makeup, and engagement makeup among others. Anybody who pays attention in the classes can definitely become a makeup artist at the end of the training.
Do you give your clients tips on makeup, good skin care etc?
I give my clients skin care advice, tips on how to maintain good skin and lots more.
Do you take into consideration the contents of the products you use and it’s effect on your client’s skin?
Before I start using a product on my clients, I usually try it first on myself. I know there are various skin types so I buy products that would suit different skin types.
Do you have any plans to start a makeup range?
Yes, I plan to start my own makeup range in the future. Watch out for it. You’ll be the first to know.
What sets House of Sapphire apart from the other makeup artists?
We have a passion for excellence, Professionalism and Punctuality. We get a lot of referrals from previous clients who are satisfied with our services.
As a makeup artist, what do you do to stay beautiful?
I focus on God to stay beautiful. There is something about the glory of God being on you that makes you radiate. I also drink a lot of water and exercise regularly.
